Gutted

You may have missed this one back in '94 if you were looking to Tampa and Stockholm to sate your cravings for blood-spattered, boneheaded Death Metal. Gutted was made up of the Ditch brothers from from Toledo, Ohio and their debut Bleed For Us To Live is a grotesque platter of grooved out hooks, sickly vocals, and bad fucking vibes. Listening to this today reminds me of when American Death Metal was played by pimply, downy-moustached stoners from bullshit towns and not by guys who look like they work at Urban Outfitters and listen to Job For A Cowboy.

  1. This is one of the most underrated death metal albums of the 90s right here. The self-titled EP is pretty good, too.

What are the downy-moustached stoners up to these days, I wonder?

  4. Probably nu metal and working on starting that landscaping business they've been talking about for years.

  5. This was oe of my favorite records of the time and I used to play it all the time on my metal show in Athens. Somewhere, I still have a letter from Billy Mils (the only non-Ditch-brother in the band) telling me that they didn't release this on vinyl, but that he'd write me when they did. I'm still waiting on that follow-up letter.

  7. when I think of swarmy mustachioed fellows from west of Pittsburgh and east of Vegas playing death metal I think of Impetigo and Repulsion. Now I can add Gutted to that list.

  8. T. Thanks for the link, I added yours.

Robert, this record would slay on vinyl. I hope that happens someday but I won't hold my breath.

  11. Lust, Ahulabrum, now Gutted... so much obscure, oddball stuff. I love it. GREAT blog! What really stands out is the number of comments under EVERY post. Dedicated bunch. And with good reason. Thanks.

  12. This RULES. Like has been said above, the cover alone makes this one stand out.

Goddamn incredible vocals too, the dude reminds me quite a bit of John Alman from Winter, which is just about as good a recommendation as I can come up with. I sure hope I don't surprise anyone when I say Winter is probably the greatest slow metal band of all time.
