Start Today

Don't act like you didn't love this album back in '89 when it dropped. With its ice cream truck-looking graphics and its goofy lyrics about "the scene" and "what's in your heart," I can understand why you might want to disregard Start Today as part of the fabric of your being, but fuck that weak shit. Put this on and remember what it was like to be 16 and so fucking sure you know everything there is to know and your feelings mattered and all that bullshit.

This is really good stuff, sure Start Today is unbelievable, but it is awesome to hear some different vocals and lyrics. Much better than Walter Sings the Hits...

  6. I've loved this since Day 1. As fucking lame as it sounds it really pulls me out of a bad mood too, and is actually one of my favorite records to get high to. Fuck the haters. This was when hardcore was about actually being positive instead of just talking about it.

  9. I dont think im too embarrassed to say that instead of this album, when i was sixteen, I rocked the shit out of screeching weasel and the queers. hey, they sang about drinking cheap beer in their moms basement. had alot more in common with that than being straight edge. but then again im from oklahoma.

  14. if Iain feels old, you and I are fucking ANCIENT, dude. I just listened to Youth of Today in honor of your post. It's not as good as I thought it was when I was 15.

  15. Aesop, not sure if you've been to www.pissinapod.com but they've got a grip of Rudimentary Peni bootlegs. I wet myself with joy when I found them.

  16. ok...

my gb ended w/ the demo. i'm sure ya' can find it on the interwebs if ya haven't heard it by now... caught them many times @ cb's sunday matinees.

    but...

by the release of this album i over the youth crew scene. on to greener pastures/the core had gotten soft kinda thing. well, more like a sXe jock-o-gap clothes, krishna bead wearing wannabe's >> DO NOT WANT << to be exact.

what had the potential to be inclusive, radical, & revolutionary had become pretty formulaic, clicky & just way too violent to support. (while it predates the late 80's nyhc scene, the big boy's damage 43, is a SPOT on critique.)

i know everybody's history differs & kids who 1st heard this album when they were like 14 (ever seen the double cross blog?) think this record rules, these were the halcyon days of hardcore, blah, blah, blah...

    whatever... that's just nostalgia talking...

  17. I got this during my tape trading days in the late 80's early 90's. It can't have been out long. If I remember correctly Biohazard's first one and The Melvins - Ozma were also on that particular tape.

  19. Aesop, I ain't done yet! next on the list might be "fucktard" and till then I'll continue to spread the "ass-candle" gospel!

awesome post b.t.w. and in case you liked the alternative version I might have a better rip of it (if it didn't die with my hd).

  20. "Fucktard" is quite popular in the US, as well ass "jagoff" which is making a comeback. "Douche bag" and "Asshat" are overused, Ass Candle is a nice break from it.

  21. "ironically, "biscuits" is what me and my friends called pills back in the day.'

We call pills biccies still, different country though.

  22. fuck all that N.Y. XXX shit...

do a post on NJ's greatest drug core bands like mental abuse and lethal agression...

    ReplyDelete
  23. It's true the band's name is a variation for "ape shit" or what NYC people were then calling 'ludes. I'm still wondering if they're the only SxE band to ever be named after a drug.

Re: the reunion shows, I recently heard at a few of the recent shows, Civ sang from a teleprompter. Sad! Still, this is a fuckin' classic, hella posi in the best way.

  24. Thanks, never heard this one before. It's actually quite good...I'm a bit surprised, I thought it'd be fairly "light" given how much flak these guys get. Stuff like "New Direction" is hardly light. Are their lyrics the only reason they get mocked so much?

  25. Heroin, from San Diego wasn't technically sXe but kinda, I think. they were definitely named after a drug though.
