Jellybeans

This record, to me and many folks around my age, was a crash course in punk. Through the Let Them Eat Jellybeans compilation my impressionable ears were impressed upon by the sheer greatness of Flipper, Bad Brains, D.O.A. and The Feederz ( I already knew about Black Flag , The Dead Kennedys, and The Circle Jerks.) The others, like Really Red, BPeople, Wounds, Half Japanese, Christian Lunch, and Voice Farm were a bit too arty for me at that age but I have since come to appreciate their contributions as well, especially Wounds' great cut "An Object." Does anyone out there know more about them? I assume this won't be a big discovery for readers as sophisticated and worldy as The Hearse's but let's listen to this one today for the nostalgia and because Reagan was the best U.S. president ever. If you have any doubts ask yourself who has graced the cover of more punk albums or had more punk songs written about him. Certainly not that do-nothing Rutheford B. Hayes.

  1. I recently read an interview with one of the Big Business dudes lamenting the current state of punk. Specifically, not seeing Dubya on more covers with swastikas or a bullet wound on his forehead. Can't say I disagree, although there are still plenty of basement shows 'round here.

  6. Indeed. I hear these tracks on their respective albums often enough, but the onrush of memories that comes from just hearing these songs in this particular order is pleasant. This album is sneaking smokes and finger banging.

  7. Speaking of punk, after your Poison Idea post, positing their (shit, title escapes me now) as THE BEST punk album ever, I found it on vinyl at a nearby record store. It's everything punk rock should be and more. Great.. GREAT record.

  10. Yeah, STiles, it always felt kinda naughty listening to that song. I guess that was their point.

  12. damn! I was just talking about that Feederz song with a friend-- it was the most shocking anti-christian thing I'd heard back in 1983 and I'd already been into venom's black metal. Feederz blasphemy was funnier.

  13. Not being worldly, I look forward to discovering all these bands. Christian Lunch has to be one of the best band names I've ever heard.

More than the music, though, I'm curious about the "Special 84 Election Jelly Vinyl!?" What?

  15. I'd always heard of this, but never had the chance to listen....until now. Thankyou! If you like Voice Farm, check out two groups called Pink Section and The Inflatable Boy Clams: the female singer (forgot her name) was in both of those groups, and they're pretty rad.

  17. while you people are enjoying this, it s my second day i ve been trying to download this and the same thing keeps popping up: Invalid File.this error bla-bla-bla.
but as for ronnie, i was watching his oath as a president on a video, i dont remember why and he was repeating the oath as if he meant to say " i will do my best to enslave the humans for you white haired master standing before me"

  19. So right about the Feederz tune. It really creeped me out when I first heard it, but still it sounded amazing. I have to say it is one of the tunes that really stuck with me over the years. On a side note, the interview in Pranks (I think that is the right one) with Frank Discussion is awesome.

  21. Thanks. I wore out my copy many years ago.

  22. I heard Flipper's HaHaHa the other day at a friend's house. It was irritating to not be followed by 'The Prisoner'...conditioned reflex I guess! Great comps have a way of doing that I suppose.
I never got into side 2 of the record as it was much more artsy - with the exception of 'Isotope Soap'.

  23. I've owned the vinyl for years. I love this album. It was one record that really got into punk 20 years ago. Thanks for the rip, and the Japanese hardcore...
