This is the LA-based SST Records Overkill. The good Overkill, not the third-rate thrash band from New York. Released in 1985, Triumph of the Will was their only full-length album, and it kicks ass. Overkill kind of sounded like the love child of Black Flag and The Dictators. Now don't you wanna fucking hear this?
Amebix was incredible!! Annihilation Time was really good. the sound sucked for Hellshock but they were decent anyway. best show since halloween

ReplyDeleteI remember this record as a kid, but I never bought it because it wasn't the third rate Overkill from NY hahaha. I have been curious about it for years though so I am ready to give it a listen.

Overkill(L.A.) rules... Bought this album the same day I bought St. Vitus'thirsty and miserable' ep... As for Anhilation Time, good fuckin band, cool fuckin peeps... Keep yer ears and eyes peeled for Plastered Bastards from Pittsburgh , btw... they can drink em under the table too!

ReplyDeleteAlcolm, though I share your enthusiasm for this record it is hardly the best thing SST put out. Have you forgotten Damaged, My War, Zen Arcade, Double Nickels, and all those great Vitus LPs? Either way, glad you dig this.

ReplyDeleteI'm going to go on the record here defending Overkill's 1st LP "Feel the Fire" as a fine slice of east coast thrash that earned a head bang or two from me back in the 80s. I recall the only shit I heard from them past that album pretty much sucked ass. Submitting as evidence in support of this argument I offer that they were formed (according of wikipedia) "from the ashes of the punk band "The Lubricunts" (who may have sucked for all I know, but that is a fine, fine band name) and they performed a passable cover of "Sonic Reducer" on "Feel the Fire"

ReplyDeleteAnonymous, yeah Over Kill (wrecking crew) was playing punk copies until 1983. The L.A. Overkill had material written, and released long before them. And there's some unreleased material from the L.A. band thats about to be given up. It doesn't sound anything like TOTW. You'll prpbably hate the vocals, but WTF, how can anybody deal with Blitz's copying of UDO?
