Gash were a great hardcore band comprised of three women and one man from Melbourne, Australia. Their songs were angry anthems decrying sexism and championing womanity and feminocity. Topics include unrealistic standards of beauty, gender roles in romantic relationships, and the media's portrayals of women, all dealt with equal parts intelligence and outrage. These were strong women taking up the frontlines in the boneheaded male-dominated world of hardcore, and they definitely deserve a "Right On Sister!!!" some 25 years later.
What a brilliant logo! I love it!
ReplyDeleteglad you're back, homeboy!
ReplyDeletei am downloading me some gash at the present time. Also, you know Bitches Wit Problemz? They got this fantastic anthem called BITCH CHANGE YOUR KOTEX. Actually the first time i ever heard that song it was being lip-synched by a drag queen but even if you just bump it on headphones it is still cool. I can hook you up if you want.
These guys were awesome! I had forgotten all about them...thanks. I had a bit of an obsession when I was a kid with anarcho bands that had female vocals but I never got this one.
ReplyDeleteDid everyone know it was GASH for Girls Against Sexist Hype? Where I came from gash meant pussy.
ReplyDeleteThanx for putting this up-they recorded most of their stuff on a 4 track from memory.
I remember reading that GASH was an acronym, but I couldn't find anything to substantiate the claim. I am still totally blown away by how cool they were, not overly whiny or preachy like the later riot grrrl crap, just women telling it like it is being fighters, not victims. Thanks for the info, and thanks for reading.
ReplyDeleteyes. this record kills.
ReplyDeletehi aesop!
excellent thanks
ReplyDeleteThanks for this one man. I have their ep " God Is Dead" and it absolutely kills. I will throw it up on my blog this week.
ReplyDeleteonly paid $10 for this baby some time back. truly a lost gem in the world of music. after the release of their lp and many shows anna(voc) left the band for reasons i dont know but gash continued. around early '87 their sound started getting heavier and more brutal. by '88 they recorded their positive change lp which is impossible to find these days. but so is all of their material. but if you look hard enough you will find the split s/t lp with depression's australia australia and other tracks. any questions about gash or depression you can ask me though here.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info, now I need to hear the positive change LP. However, it's not clear who you are or how to obtain more info from you.
ReplyDeleteif you want to hear more gash/depression go to
