Man, I have really been enjoying Donut Duck's great blog of all things SST Records, so in tribute, I bring you SST's 1983 mission statement of a compilation, The Blasting Concept. This was my introduction to Saccharine Trust, The Minutemen, and Hüsker Dü, all of which blasted my teenage mind right out my fucking earholes. The concept wasn't wasted on me. Oh the onrush of memories brought on by simply hearing these songs in this particular order. Perfect. The tracklist.
Minutemen - Paranoid Chant
Minutemen - The Maze
Minutemen - Boiling
Minutemen - Games
Meat Puppets - Tumblin' Tumbleweeds
Meat Puppets - Meat Puppets
Saccharine Trust - A Human Certainty
Black Flag - Nervous Breakdown
Black Flag - Jealous Again
Black Flag - I've Heard It Before
Overkill - Hell's Getting Hotter
Stains - Get Revenge
Würm - I'm Dead
Hüsker Dü - Real World
aesop, i am a bit speechless -- i feel honoured! Thanks alot - that, alond with Russ' post made my week! And right you are - The Blasting Concept introduced alot of us to the SST world. When i first listened to Husker Du, that was the day Metal Circus came out, i hated it. Because i had the Pinnacle UK press i thought of it as some UK wanna-be pop shit. It took me eight or so years to get into it (and Land Speed Record did it for me in the early '90s - when all was sold and gone!!). Oh well, i think my sign is either late bloomer or ricochet...!
ReplyDeleteIt is great,I especially love the Lovedolls sountrack and all the Pat Smear shit especially The Deathfolk. The Local corporate record store up here in Rutland,VT went out of Business back around 1998 and they had about60 or 70 % of the SSt catalog in the 4 for a 1.00 bin.I was 15 and spent every penny I had clearing that bin out. That Deathfolk album is great .And last but not least,i've always loved the Meat Puppets and their cover of No Values.
ReplyDeleteNo, Thank You, Mr. Duck. I appreciate the work that goes into making such a specialized blog, and you do it with a passion and a thoroughness that deserves applause.
ReplyDeleteThanks alot, aesop. While i wasn't sure if people would take my blog i now realize i struck a nerve.
ReplyDeleteWho knows, maybe someday i am going to write a book about SST...!
Thanks alot again!
DD
P.S.: Do you happen to have the AMUCK compilation on Placebo Records to post??
I think you should write that book. I been kicking around the idea of writing a proposal to do a 33 and 1/3 book about "My War"
ReplyDeleteI don't have that comp, but I'll certainly look into it.

ReplyDeletelooking at this track list reminds me of what an eclectic label SST was and how it really embodied a creative punk rock spirit. All these bands were great and unique in their own right. I'll be dusting off my copy of "Pagan Icons" tonight.
ReplyDeletecould you please re-post "The Blasting Concept" to any file hosting service other than Zshare? Nothing ever downloads from them anymore. They just keep looping advertisements.
ReplyDeleteZshare has had some issues lately but seems fine now. If you don't trust it go here:

L.A. Stains were SOOOOO good their one and only LP is AMAZING. East Los Angy Punk Metal withOUT a Suicidal approach. Way before the trend I believe actually. I need The Undertakers music as well. Who's got it?
ReplyDeleteSac. Trust is God. I saw them w/ BF on the Damaged tour and I probably wept.
OverKill - the EP they did for SST is the definition of RULE. Merrill an nem hooked it up so freakin good.
The Cheifs arent on here, but were an overlooked LA band that I cant find much on...
Darby produced the 7" they did...

There is a CD retrospective of Chiefs material. They weren't bad, but a little more like English 77 style rocking punk. Not as ferocious as Flag, Overkill, or The Stains. Thanks for all the comments, it's an honor to know you visit here. I am a fan of your work.
ReplyDeleteOne of my all-time favourite comps along with "Digging In Water", "Viva Umkhonto", "A Farewell To Arms" & "Keine experimente 1+2".
ReplyDeleteThat Sac Trust song is the greatest they ever did, IMHO - but what do I know? :)
Great Blog with some real gems, btw.
Hanx and keep up the good work!

Wow- Total blast from the past. Thanks so much for posting all this totally great great stuff. I probably still have this somewhere on a cassette, I listened to it over and over and over when I was a kid back in suburban chicagoland, it introduced me to all sorts of trouble back then and I am utterly grateful to have been able to find this sort of thing in the record bins at Record City or Wax Trax or wherever I picked it up back then. I'm downloading it now, will see how it holds up to the nostalgia...
ReplyDeleteDoes anybody have Blasting Concept Vol.2? The Husker Du track on there is excellent...

ReplyDeleteMust RE-UP!!!!
if i ever find the individual behind zshare i am going to eat their face and then spit it back at what remains of their head.
ReplyDelete26 Minutes of pure FUCK YES. So many 80's memories of my angry lonely and righteous punk teenage years right here, and bands like Saccharine Trust and Wurm who would point my musical tastes in new directions.
