Gjennom Morke Skogen. There's something very magical about this tape of seemingly improvised, instrumental Black Metal from Norwegian band, Istorn. Istorn is led by Udeth who is also the weird brain behind Unbeing.
A few years of my early teens my parents decided to move out of town and live in a shack in the forrest, which sucked. Lucky me. Anyway, point is there ain't nada scary about dark forrests. Perhaps in Norway? Hahahaha
The only thing scary about Sweden is the Swedes. Also, black metal isn't exactly supposed to be about scary shit either.
Udeth was also in Grenjar who released an interesting demo in 2002. They sent me an extra-nekro edition since I specifically requested a shoddy production, so they played off the demo on one tape recorder and recorded it with the built-in microphone on a second one right next to it. If I recall correctly, at one point one of the dudes' mother comes in the room and asks them to turn it down. They also sent me a midget-sized chainmail and wrote the accompanying letter in exclusively upside-down letters. That song Ishavet was fuckin' ruling.
As far as instrumental improvised black metal goes, Canadians AUFKREMA were absolutely mindblowingly fantastic at the time.
