I knew he wasn't in the best of health. His liver was shot. But I just expected he would get a transplant and pull through. The guy was a real survivor. Just a beast. This is so sad.
No one played like he did. No one today can even touch him.
No! This is awful. And coincidentally, I was going to post "Mutiny" to my blog later today. Next to Black Sabbath, The Birthday Party are my favorite band of all time. One of the greatest guitarists indeed. I will be forever indebted to him for inspiration.
I cannot believe that he is gone- he was my favorite rock guitarist bar none. He was also a great songwriter. Since the first album by These Immortal Souls is long out of print (and a goddamn great album, better than any Nick Cave solo shit) , here is a rip of it:
crushed!...he will be missed terribly. as responsible (if not more so) for the greatness of the birthday party as nick cave was. and a shout out for his "other" band crime & the city solution...too soon, too soon.
The two albums by These Immortal Souls and Rowland's two solo albums were all fucking amazing as well. They should be heard by anyone craving real, raw true rock music.
Fuck no, this is just awful. The Birthday Party is an all time favorite of mine. His solo work is great too. Who else has a tone that cuts the way his did? Going to listen to Junkyard now. Fuck.
yeah well it is just a matter of opinion. I loved These Immortal Souls. So there were different from the Birthday Party. The drum work by Epic Soundtracks on those two TIS albums was amazing, as far as I'm concerned. That first TIS album has been unavailable for ages, so I thought that it would be nice to share a link.
The Birthday Party made some great noise, though certainly in England they spawned some piss awful lame gothy shit. I put it down to difficulty in obtaining copies of Funhouse here but I digress....and not their fault anyway. But found this recently
Pretty good, and pretty late too, so you get stuff of the Bad Seed EP. enjoy. The Live 81/82CD has a killer set on it, the one that was on "Drunk on The Pope's Blood" split with Lydia Lunch (maybe the worst non spoken word Lydia record out there) unfortunatley the CD cuts off the killer version of "Loose" originally on the vinyl....
this fucking sucks.one of my all time faves.the birthday party is godhead.i have some swell demos and a great unreleased live boot when they first played in the u.k. i'll post that soon!at: sluggisha.blogspot.com .this is unbelievable,i am saddened
the first gig i saw when i first moved to Melbourne was Roland and his acoustic wasted on smack nodding off between verses, i was fucked too and it was perfect. I used to bump into him all the time back then. An intense little guy with nervous energy and a total deadpan fuck it all look in his eyes with a cheeky smile trying to burst out. He was a legend to me and I always wondered what went on in his head with The Birthday Party behind him and having to watch others carreers blow up bigtime. He seemed a sad soul. The world ha lost another great artist. He will be missed. RIP Roland.
oh no. no no no. god no.

elmer, I think people were stating that Rowland's death is terrible, not the links you provided. Very gracious of you.
ReplyDeleteJust one more intense bummer in a year full of them. Way too many musicians died this year. This is definitely an unpleasant way to end the year.
