Twenty-two tracks in just over sixteen minutes, and everything from War to pigs to capitalism to the government to society is laid to waste by one of the most hostile and potent hardcore bands of all time. Still holds up and an excellent way to kick off the new year.
I like your style
ReplyDelete"Happy birthday dear president"
(MM to JFK)
still rages after all these years
ReplyDeleteThis is Hardcore History, total hangover remedy, love it!
ReplyDeleteLove this and Dealing With It. Saw them here in Australia in '87 (Spurs in Canberra) and it was one of the most intense shows I've ever seen. At that time no American h.c. bands were coming out here so it was a BIG deal for us. Also at that time there was a wide-spread skinhead scene infecting our east coast like a fucking plague. They tolerated english punk but hated the US scene and skateboarders with an obsessive passion. They turned up at the show in force and started heckling the last support act Mass Appeal. Then two songs into DRI's set they just waded into the slam-pit and started wailing on everyone in reach. These guys were big neanderthal apes and most of us punks were pretty feeble skinny little teenagers. I was fucking terrified. DRI stopped, alot of fighting and confusion happened, then it kind of ebbed and one of the older punkers from my group of friends got on stage, grabbed the mic and basicly rallied everyone in the room to fight for our right to see this band we all loved so much. Fighting started again, more violent this time, and I saw some heavy shit go down including Mass Appeal's singer Randy smash a skin HARD in the face with a cymbal stand. Must have fucked that guy up good. Then all of a sudden Andre the fucking Giant waded into the melee. I think he must have been DRI's roadie. This shaven-headed giant totally K.O.'d two huge fuckwits who I'd been mortally scared of for years. Their biggest and best fighters out for the count, the crew of nazi ass-fuckers limped out of the venue to find about 10 paddywagons waiting for them. Word has it the pigs took em all down town and beat them to a pulp in the cells. And that quite simply, was the end of our nazi problem. They mostly scattered to other cities. Within a couple of years I heard that two of the worst of 'em had their last shots and put themselves out of my misery. That night DRI took to the stage again and raged through one of the most out of control, ripping sets I've ever witnessed. Worst tinnitus I've ever had. Thank you.
ReplyDeletei used to have a bootleg of this on a 7". wish i hung onto it.
ReplyDeletefuck yes!
ReplyDeleteGreat Punk Hair Cut on the cover and a heart warming story from Aylmer above. It's always fucked at shows when there's 5 skins fucking shit up and 100 punks not retaliating. Anyways "What's So Funny About Peace,Love and Understanding." HAPPY NEW YEAR.
ReplyDeleteGreat album, one of the fastest I've ever heard. I like their thrash stuff too.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your story Aylmer. I don't think Reign in Blood would of happened if not for this release.
ReplyDeleteThank you as always Aesop.
sills
ReplyDeleteAylmer, this is how punk scenes all across the world should've dealt with it (pun intended.) When Miami got rough, I got out.
ReplyDeleteHardcore Perfection right here. This is one of those albums that you can listen to everyday for 10 years and everytime....CHILLS. RAGE.
ReplyDeleteAylmer: i love that story man, and I hate nazi skins,i love DRI and i really dig this blog and im an aussie to boot.
ReplyDeletePeAce out.
Excellent post, and an excellent story from Aylmer. I got the Massappeal CD reissue Relapse did a few years back, and the incident was mentioned in the sleeve for that; it's interesting (and heartwarming) to read the full story.
ReplyDeleteBack to the post itself... it's ironic, pretty much as you were posting this I was discussing D.R.I. with a friend of mine. We basically agreed that the first couple of records were some of the most awesome shit ever and totally raised the bar for fast music at the time. Great stuff!
D.R.I. was one of the best bands i ever saw in 1983. they were so cool; coming early to a Sunday gig in Cleveland, setting up there shit and eating sandwiches. They had a huge piece of paper that they unrolled and hung from the ceiling that had about 60 songs on it. Happy fucking new year! You are awesome!
ReplyDeleteI saw DRI in 1989 with Nasty Savage during the Thrash Zone era,the venue was packed,3 mosh pits, plus some nazis,I ended up in the hospital.Subsequent shows during the 1990's were poorly attended but they are playing OKC in a few weeks maybe some of the retro-thrash kids will come out. The 22 song LP is the best DRI album by far, pure non metalized thrash!
ReplyDeleteI still have this in my collection.
ReplyDeleteThanks guys, I'm glad you could appreciate my reminiscence. It's a memory that sometimes still gets dusted off on drunken nights amongst my friends, but I've never really shared it with anyone else. "Tel", I'm gonna have to check out that Relapse Mass Appeal reissue. Is it "Nobody Likes A Thinker" or "Jazz"?? I know there's a live track or two from that night on an Aussie reissue of Thinker and you can hear Randy responding to some of the heckling.
ReplyDeletei LOVE your blog, thank you so much for yr time and energy in sharing this amazing archive of amaazing shit!! check my blog out.

cheers from australia!
awesome blog, thank you!
ReplyDeleteSearchin' high and low tubes of the innernett for Impulse Manslaughter, School Of Violence, contemporaries of those Dirty Rotten Imbeciles. 80's punk and hardcore still shits on their modern day counterparts.
ReplyDeleteRicky Bobby, I have Impulse Manslaughter's "Burn One Naked, And Nuke It" and it will appear on The Hearse at some point.
ReplyDeleteYyyyow,
ReplyDeleteGood to hear this. This also was re-issued on a CD/cass with the skeleton soldier on the cover. Plus it comes with all sorts of demo and live stuff. Perhaps some ep stuff? I'm too lazy to check. It's listed in various DRI discographies online.
Thanks a bunch for this!
ReplyDelete'dealing with it' tour in spokane, WA - that show was when the bikers here discovered the punk scene. i stood up in the pit at exactly the wrong moment and took a gypsy joker's boot square in the face. broke my nose, cracked my front teeth, blacked both my eyes and possibly fractured at least one (maybe both) cheeks. also the night i met my 1st ex-wife, staggering up to a party at her place after the show and asking, through mashed and mumbling lips "do you have any ice?" good times.
ReplyDeletethey also played spokane during the 'crossover' tour a year (or two?) later. i worked the door for that one, so didn't get to see it, but did spend too much of the evening chasing down teenage skinheads, taking away their knives and sharpened screwdrivers. great pic from that show here, taken (i think) by my friend jon swanstrom: http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af210/giant_nerd/n1514101452_1129247_5802.jpg
thanks for the blog, aesop. you're on the verge of inspiring me to start my own...
Aylmer - the Massappeal reissue on Relapse is Nobody Likes A Thinker. The CD includes the mini-LP itself, the Bar Of Life 7", a compilation track from 1988, "Young, Dumb and Naive" demo, and five songs recorded at that D.R.I. show. Total running time of 77 minutes. I'll have to admit, I'm not familiar with the band other than that CD, so I don't know how it weighs up against the other reissues, but there's the info for ya.
ReplyDeleteTel, thanks so much for that info, sounds like a better reissue than the Aussie one which I've got at home somewhere (which I guess is on Waterfront Records). I heartily recommend their second LP, Jazz. The original vinyl was a sweet 2xLP gate-fold. I just did a quick search to see if I could find it on someone's blog, but no luck. To the Anon guy above, sucks what happened to you, but that photo rules! Same tour I saw DRI on - Crossover. Thanks again for such a great blog Aesop.

ReplyDeleteKurt Brecht mentions that (Aylmer's story) incident here http://markprindle.com/brecht-i.htm
ReplyDeletejust happened to be reading it, thought it might be of interest.
Thanks, E. BTW D.R.I. is playing in SF tonight with Attitude Adjustment but I am stuck home with an 8 year old.
