I never really cared for most of their stuff, but the debut album by The Meat Puppets is a keeper. It seemed a fitting gap between the Minutemen and Black Flag. All the angular skronk of classic SST with the addition of a sun-baked LSD vibe. Classic.
Despite the great name I've always shied away from checking them out: they give off sucky scratch-'em-and-you'll-find-a-lame-pothead vibes. BUT, if they're on the Hearse this must at least be worth a spin :)
ReplyDeleteQuite simply one of the greatest albums EVER. I love II as well, but the other albums are way too polished. Saw em in NY in '93 and they sucked - so boring. But yeah, this and II are fucking untouchable.
ReplyDeleteLove the In a car ep, always makes me rock out.
ReplyDeleteI had not seen this band's name for a million years!!! I am gonna go listen to them right now.
ReplyDeleteThank you Aesop!
this is one of the first punk records i got a hold of. still strong after all the years. and yes, no, this is the only meat puppets record. everything else sucks. a beautiful album..
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite albums of all time. I remember buying it on cassette when I was 13 or so. At first I thought the tape was damaged. It was the single most fucked up thing I had ever heard. And I couldn't stop listening to it. Thanks for reminding me of this gem.
ReplyDeletegriebs, i gotta disagree, 2 is an incredible album as well just a totally different vibe. I gotta hear this one again to decide which was better. Never liked anything they did after these two.

this is cool, but i prefer 2...some people prefer blotter to sugar cubes...
ReplyDeletekombatrock
II is still the best from them.
ReplyDeleteWhilst this is a cracking album, it is definately the weakest of all their efforts. I prefer Meat Puppets 2 and Up on the Sun. They were more varied, diverse and interesting. Like Flag and The Huskers, the MP got bored of Hardcore very quickly.
ReplyDeleteDrinking Imperial and listening to this.....thanks. Was looking at the new Decibel and Ludicra is in it(as you know)and my roommate was telling me how his band(Sbitch) many moons ago played a show with you guys in the bay. Anyways the band Abrupt from the bay stayed with us last weekend and we were talkin' about Ludicra,blah,blah,blah...nothing to do with the Meat Puppets but ya' know(all about you,ha,ha,ha.)
ReplyDeleteSadly I was turned on to the latter releases. I really hope I can connect with this. But it might be like asking someone to connect with firehose post first album.
ReplyDeleteII is fucking incredible, this ones just OK. The 'Teenagers' flexi is pure insanity. I love youse all.
ReplyDeleteAll of their shit is amazing. II is definitely better, and the rest of their catalog is underrated due to neanderthals who can't handle a little talent and audio clarity.
