One of my favorite bands, Mighty Sphincter, released their first LP, The New Manson Family in 1986, and despite what the liner notes say, Alice Cooper did not produce this album. Weird that one of America's most compelling goth bands in the '80s would hail from Phoenix, Arizona, but all that heat and bad blotter acid permeates every Sphincter release, and only adds to the nauseating, whirling confusion of their sound. This band was wholly ignored and dismissed in their day, but now this style is all the rage, so maybe they can finally get receive the praise they deserved. I believe mainman Doug Clark has resurrected the Mighty Sphincter, maybe a new album? Fuck, I hope so.
Speaking of Phoenix and goth...about 10 years ago we were on tour and had a show in Phoenix during some psychotic heat wave they were having. It was 118 degrees downtown and my mind got melted... not so much from the misery of being in one of the worst places on the planet... but by a group of fully decked out, full-suit, black leather pants, JACKETS, boots-- goth punk lurkers-- unencumbered and uncompromised, walking around town without looking like they gave a morbid fuck about anything.
ReplyDeleteIt shits all over Mary Manson.
ReplyDeleteHeads up: winzip is saying track 11 is mangled won't extract. Oh well it is only 1 song.
ReplyDeleteFuck yeah. One of my favorite albums by anyone anywhere. The title song alone just twitches and spazzes with dark violence.
ReplyDeleteGreat band. There's a cd out there compiling most of their material. Also, big love for "This is Pheonix not the Circle Jerks" --Sun City Girls + Sphincter + JFA.
ReplyDeletedevil approved...

Total love for this album. Picked it up cheap in Tokyo last year. Awesome!
ReplyDeleteA389 has some news at a new record....
ReplyDeleteYeah, such a great album. Have not busted it out in a while, so this gives me some impetus to do so. I felt pretty awesome when I found it cause I knew at the time I was the only person in my city who probably had any clue about this band.
ReplyDeleteMighty Sphincter have a new record coming out on www.A389Records.com
ReplyDeleteThat helter skelter cover is up there with Siouxsie and the Banshees and Mötley Crüe versions if not better.
ReplyDeleteI'm more into Ghost Walking but I love this band and am psyched to see them get the brown nosing they have always deserved. Missed you the other night, sorry you had to work, tell Christy and Ross thanks for dropping those records by!
ReplyDeleteThe best Death Rock band period! If this style is all the rage, please point me in that direction!
ReplyDeleteDo you have a copy of their "Holy Unholy" album released 6 or 7 years back? It's pretty good. If you need a copy, let me know.
"Holy Unholy" and "Kingdome of Heaven" are waiting in the wings. Trying to get a hold of "R.I.P. New Orleans"
ReplyDeleteAesop, I may have "R.I.P. New Orleans" somewhere. I just moved so it may take some checking. I'll get back to you.
ReplyDeleteThank you Aesop, the other stuff by these guys you posted was mind blowing and creepy (though it's been on other blogs 3-4 years ago.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
this is great, lookin forward to more stuff by them
ReplyDeleteWow. The heat must sap your brains. People like this shit? It's godawful, terrible 'singing'. I get it, sloppy's the point, but no wonder they're obscure. Methinks the sphincter needs a proctologist.
ReplyDeleteIf you are loooking for any Mighty Sphincter stuff, Greg Hynes has some re-releases and shirts n things available on ebay. He is seller captain$howdy if I am correct. Ask him and he may have live stuff on dvd for sale too. I was about to buy some stuff a while back , but been so broke I only got the cd release of Ghostwalking/NMF (both albums on one cd)
ReplyDeleteOne of my fave bands of all time.
