Invoke The Dark Age

We're going all the way back to the dark ages of 1994 with Abigor's debut full-length album Verwüstung - Invoke the Dark Age. Abigor are the elite of Austrian Black Metal and this record proved that furious Black Metal in the early '90s wasn't solely the charge of the Norwegian kids. This also marks a time when Napalm Records released interesting records, and not just goofy folk metal and symphonic crap with chicks on the cover. Absolutely essential.

  2. Yes, I second it's essentiality. I like your sentence that says "...this record proved that furious Black Metal in the early '90s wasn't solely the charge of the Norwegian kids.". Darkness came from all countries at that time. And this is a great time capsule for that evil and contempt. About Napalm Records: Through looking at my old magazines [Metal Maniacs,Ill Literature, Pit, BW & BK and Terrorizer], you could always tell a Napalm Records ad when you first lay your sight upon it. Amusing, yet with a little scoffing.

  10. The second song, "Kingdom of Darkness" opens with a sample from one of the most powerful scenes of Bergman's "The Seven Seal." Right at that moment I knew I'd love this fucking band.

  13. Great album. Completely missed these guys 10+ years ago so many thanks for the chance to get into Abigor's weird little world. Some things in common with Satyricon, mainly the razor-sharp guitar tone & acoustic instruments. Vocals do sound a bit like Emperor, if heard from less of a distance. Arrangements put them over the top - ahead of the curve for 1994, IMO. Bass guitar is present in the mix as something other than an extra layer of distortion. Epic.

  16. Awesome to see so much Abigor love. A great band that I haven't listened to in a while, thanks for the reminder to dig out some of their stuff again. I also dig on Channeling the Quintessence of Satan pretty hard.
