None of the Above

Hardcore from the '80s and Tulsa Oklahoma. These guys had to contend with skinheads AND Socs. One night N.O.T.A. were leaving a movie theater and got jumped by a bunch of Socs, but fortunately they were saved by Darry and Sodapop. Then there was a fire and Johnny died or some shit. Stay gold, N.OT.A., stay gold.

  1. Being Australian, I'm going to need some further explanation as to who or what 'Socs' were/are...

  2. heh heh heh... wasn't Twobit Matthews in N.O.T.A., too? I heard they had a very uneasy alliance with Tim and Curly Sheppard, as well. of course, that was then- this is now.

  3. Great stuff! Their approach is a bit simple at times, but then again, what´s wrong with that? Straight and to the point is sometimes the best!
I especially like their first two 45s, "Moscow" and "Toy soldiers".The title songs take it easier on the tempo and tada! - the band presents two real hits! The LP is great though, too.

    Stay gold, Aesop, stay gold!

  4. awesome! a tulsa hardcore post infused with Outsider's references. though there were some very real fights 'tween the punks and skins that came out to see NOTA. though i guess that happened all over the country.

  6. I loved the Live at the Crystal Pistol tape (reissued on CD a few years back) and the two 7" EPs. I thought the LP was a step down, though; I was disappointed in the turn toward genericore. It didn't help when they came to play in my town when the album came out; they were kinda dicks and they heckled Scream, who were monstrous.

  7. S.E. Hinton with an 80s punks vs. skins backdrop.....love it.

  8. There early shit was way cool. I used to clash with the skins alot, and if I'd ever met a social I woulda stomped a mud hole in the side of his face. I'm gonna give this a spin, and please in the future add more shucking and jiving to the blog, this is insanely awesome. By the way, glad you're back this blog shit was getting old.

  10. waitaminute, is there a draft of the Outsiders movie script I'm not aware of? Did it originally star the NOTA members as all the main characters? Why the fuck was that scrapped??

  12. They played SUN amps, and had a "big boy" swagger when I saw them. Kinda like The State, they seemed real grown up. And they ROCKED the fuckin house down! Thanks for posting.

  13. Arrrghh fuck YES.

The word "soc" (or "socie") is I guess a uniquely Oklahoman slang term for preppy-type kids.

Saw them play a tiny little coffeehouse in Norman about 17 years ago and they killed. At least, until the cops showed up to close the show down.
