Here's another small dose of this Witch House drug that has all the cool kids panty-moist and clamoring for more obscure vinyls and CDRs by entities with names like †‡†, ///▲▲▲\\\, ▼□■□■□■, pyr∆mid, White Ring, oOoOO, SLEEP ∞ OVER. But this is SALEM, one of the bigger names in this fledgling scene. This single contains two druggy, synthy, throbby numbers that sound a bit more benevolent than other SALEM releases I have heard. You may hate this kind of shit, I do not. You may dismiss this whole thing as another passing trend to clutter up the landfills and clearance bins of a not-too-distant future, sure, but who gives a fuck?

ReplyDeleteI heard one of their other works, sounded like hip hop, synths and druggy vocals. This will be the same?
ReplyDeleteGlad you made me give all this another look. I saw White Ring last night (after getting to see both Swans AND Earth!) and really enjoyed them. Wish I had video footage of the white folks "dancing" to share. Hilarious.
ReplyDeleteKrallice tonight! Raleigh NC's Hopscotch festival is no joke. Would love to see Agalloch on the bill next year!
I heard a mixtape where they were rapping over King Night...The wahjah was unmeasurable.
ReplyDeleteI think the full-length is as much as I can take.
Call me a hipster fag but the first Salem LP is "compromise jams" for the strange teenagers who live in my house and don't pay rent. It's no Maniac soundtrack but...they like, I like. Common ground is helpful but they're still grounded for not doing the dishes.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your recent shark-jumping.
ReplyDeletediggin it. good music to listen whilst stoned. thanks aesop. also just found out about the influence of dj screw on this stuff. fascinating stuff, i really like it. fuck the haters.
ReplyDeletelots of folk do "hate this kind of shit" and also "i do not" as well. This genre kinda seems ( from my severely limited and new knowledge )kinda like the re-invention of "death rock" which in my definition pre-dates goth. (More like, Jesus and Mary Chain,New Order,Cocteau Twins, Love and Rockets, Bauhaus and others. Clove cigarettes and trench coats.) ...mixed with today's aesthetic of "club" music.
ReplyDeleteWhich, is fine by me. I love me some Black Metal, but, this is a nice change of pace.
I also hear some Coil, Orb, and other "dark" electro influences...I guess I am still trying to make sure I regard this as a new "genre"
and not really just an evolved "genre"
Cool stuff, none the less.
love the last one looking forward to checkin this out , thanks
ReplyDeleteSalem are amazing.
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine turned me on to John Maus...80's electronic/dark wave sounding stuff....figured I'd check this stuff out.
