You know as well as I that Darkthrone rules. So widely regarded is this fact that some of the greatest Norwegian bands came together on this compilation to pay tribute to the most influential Norse Black Metal band of all time. Here's the rundown...
Satyricon-Kathaarian Life Code
Enslaved-Natassja In Eternal Sleep
Thorns-The Pagan Winter
Emperor-Cromlech
Dodheimsgard-Green Cave Float
Gehenna-Transilvanian Hunger
Gorgoroth-Slottet I Det Fjerne
Immortal-To Walk The Infernal Fields
Oh, by the way, the Gorgoroth and Immortal songs are one track because the Immortal track was supposed to be like a hidden bonus track.
sweet,
ReplyDeleteok, that sounds gay in referance to a Darkthrone tribute
how about,
my blackened heart pumps with the blood of a thousand sacrificed virgins in anticipation to the extreme sounds of the aural asault that will be laid upon my ears wilst this plays
\m/ HAILS \m/
thanks for this post Aesop
DARKTHRONE is my favorite metal band ever (besides LUDICRA of corse). they are one of the only metal bands to get better with age. The Cult Is Alive and F.O.A.D. are total crust influenced black metal. the knew album "Dark Thrones & Black Flags" comes out October 20th
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'd only heard the Enslaved and Emperor covers before. I must say though. I am surprised/slightly disappointed that none of the bands covered anything off of Panzerfaust. I think Panzerfaust is the best album of theirs besides the first three BM albums of theirs. Soulside Journey is great too with it's Autopsy-worship and like Nickthrone said, the last two albums are pretty great too.
ReplyDeleteI've seen quite a few tributes to Darkthrone and aton dedicated to Burzum as well.Would you recommend any others in addition to this one?
ReplyDeleteAll Darkthrone is brilliant and respectable. Cheers for this.
ReplyDeleteWhat a gem! Can't wait to throw on the headphones and listen to this today. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteTroy, I know of no other Darkthrone tributes. There are several Burzum ones out there though.
ReplyDeletei ve been loving this since it came out :) i still have the tape! did anyone noticed that about half-way, or something like that, through the gorgoroth cover the singer coughs?
ReplyDeletealways found that very funny :)))
sorry i didnt download it though
this year DARKTHRONE released a box set called The Frostland Tapes that has all their demos, a live show in Denmark, and an unreleased version of Goatlord. The Goatlord CD is especially cool because it doesn't have the shitty vocals that were added later

Those weird, too-high-in-the-mix vocals make Goatlord my favorite Darkthrone album, that and the overplaying by Fenris.
ReplyDeleteI must admit that I haven't bought any Darkthrone albums after "Total Death" which was IMO a Total Disappointment.
Not too impressed with graveyard slut but the rest of the album is good.Actually the music rocks, just pathetic lyrics
ReplyDeleteI was just cranking Soulside Journey on my drive home from work today. I've previously only heard the Emperor cover off this comp. Great stuff, the Thorns cover is very cool! (now theres a band I wish would release a second damn album)
ReplyDeleteUoy know I may be mistaken,It's just that I've seen so may Burzum tributes on so many blogs,my head just tells me there were some Darkthrone ones thrown in too, maybe not.
ReplyDeleteI have a particular favorite Burzum tribute called "Burzum Attak" which is only interesting because it has alot of really lo-fi terrible bands doing Burzum covers. Mostly Brazilian bands. It's very weird and punk in a way. I highly recommend you find it.
ReplyDeletethe track "desolate majestic eye" from total death is one of the best darkthrone tracks ever. plus "earths last picture"... you're crazy. that album rocks.
ReplyDeleteHey Aesop, there was an ulllltra-underground compilation called "The next thousand years are ours" released by Destr0y records in 2001 or so that features an incomprehensible Danish version of "Skald av satans sol" by Demon realm, it's fantastic and makes absolutely no sense at the same time. I'm on it too, with my one-off two-man affair THOR (NORWAY) (the band name was supposed to be a joke in regard to Hades who called themselves HADES (NORWAY) for a short while, but absolutely no one caught on.) I can hook you up with MP3's if you're interested and my age-old CDR still works.
ReplyDeleteAs for this compilation, I was very disappointed when it finally came out. It's no wonder Satyricon is the first band on the disc to put it lightly. The Dødheimsgard cover is goddamn fantastic though, huge gigantic props to them for snatching a tune off their greatest work and actually sickening it up. The piano makes just as much sense as the "female" vocals did on the original. Absolutely incredible.
I was at an old boyfriends house once and this was onI guess I asked about it or something and he told me "It's Darkthrone.Unholy Darkthrone"But I was like"this sounds pretty holy to me" He tried to argue and even hold his finger in front of the title when I wanted to see the album cover!Well since then I always wondered if that really happened. Now here is proof that it did!
ReplyDeletehey Aesop can you post that BURZUM comp? i can't find it anywhere :(
ReplyDeleteDodheimsgard original shit is pretty fuckin good, btw... they have what I refer to as their techno song, too, which is incredible....
ReplyDeleteDodheimsgard is one of my all time favorite bands and was a huge influence on my own band. 'Monumental Possession' is perfection. I even love their later more robotic stuff.
ReplyDeleteGod I love the Thorns track on here. When the hell is Snorre gonna get off his behind and do a 2nd record?
