Oum

Thanks and praise to Awesome Tapes From Africa for this one.

Very silly wonderful you want to get rid of your clothes and as a party raging fuck horse. Do you rejoice in the beautiful voices and rhythms of the wild. The Celine Dion Egypt, you are still OUM no one from wherever you are to marry.

thank god for google translate.

There is so much to say about Oum Kulthum!

Wikipedia does a pretty good job: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umm_Kulthum

Also Joe Sacco's comic book, Palestine, has a great section about discovering her music and biography.

It's beyond cool that you posted this.

These days the comments do little more than confuse and titillate me.

interesting with the audience: its like a burst of song, then applause....then again some singing...then applause

..the singing is like jazz solos...

LOL!
This brings back good memories when I'd whine all day to my mom to pop into the now-oh-so-obsolete radio cassette some Erasure instead of Oum Kalthoum.

Oh well, nowadays you can belly dance to the remixed versions of her songs instead. Good stuff.
