R.I.P. Joe Albanese

Maybe you heard about the shooting in Seattle yesterday. Apparently Joe Albanese, the original bassist of one of The Hearse's favorite bands, Mighty Sphincter, was among one who was killed. I know this might be a great place to decry senseless violence and state how important it is to look after our fellow man in these troubled times but I just don't have it in me. Fuck this place. Bye Joe.

The New Manson Family

One of my favorite bands, Mighty Sphincter, released their first LP, The New Manson Family in 1986, and despite what the liner notes say, Alice Cooper did not produce this album. Weird that one of America's most compelling goth bands in the '80s would hail from Phoenix, Arizona, but all that heat and bad blotter acid permeates every Sphincter release, and only adds to the nauseating, whirling confusion of their sound. This band was wholly ignored and dismissed in their day, but now this style is all the rage, so maybe they can finally get receive the praise they deserved. I believe mainman Doug Clark has resurrected the Mighty Sphincter, maybe a new album? Fuck, I hope so.

Ghost Walking

Mighty Sphincter's second release, Ghost Walking shows a bit of evolution from their debut EP. Even more druggy, somnambulant and nightmarish. Kind of like meeting your mom's new boyfriend while you're on PCP. Sort of like waking up with dried BBQ sauce in your briefs. Not unlike having a grand mal seizure in a mascot's costume, and because you're in a costume, no one notices or tries to help you.

The Brainz

The Brainz was the pre-Mighty Sphincter band of Mr. Douglas Clark and Mr. Greg Hines. This was self-released in 1979 and features 2 great songs not terribly unlike what Sphincter would go on to do. I know this was sort of a holy grail for record collectors, but you remember what Poison Idea said about record collectors. So here it is....

Mighty Sphincter ep

Mighty Sphincter were Arizona's acid soaked goth kings of high weirdness. This was their debut, and it is an ugly, swirling, drug-fueled skull fucking ride to the knotty peaks of schizophrenia mountain. Mighty Sphincter spew forth four songs with some oddly engaging guitar playing and manic jazzy drumming. Uncomfortable and cummy. Shimmering yet dark. The whole twisted affair is wrapped up with Black Sabbath's "Electric Funeral" Sphincterized into "Electric Hose-Bag."
