Bango

VAMOS ALTA!!! Bango were an obscure Brazilian hard psych band that dropped one blotter soaked tab of an album in 1970, and what a record. Cool fuzzy guitars, kooky spooky organs, some mellower moments ("But I Felt"), a jokey song ("The Priest, The Doctor, The Mayor, and Me") and some primal fucking hard rocking freakout ("Rock Dream".) There is a lot going on here, Bango had no shortage of ideas, and the result was a stellar album, sadly their only recorded output. Get high, motherfuckers.

This Just In

The Wizard of the second most awesome blog on the interweb, is easily one of my favorite people on earth. We have shared a room, risked life and limb on tour together, and laughed heartily at one another's farts. Today he writes me:

Hi dude. Hope you are well.I got this record in Brasil, shit rules. Bought it from a street vendor who pulled out a bunch of metal when we walked up...well, at least he said it was metal but it was a pile of hopelessly partied on pop punk. I gave up, and then a local dude said I should check this out, said they were the first speed metal band from Brasil, and that they came from Belém, where we were. The vendor put it on, and I was hooked from the drum intro. Not sure what the deal is, but the record appears to have been released (or sponsored) by Pepsi, and please check out how fried (or disabled) Pedro is at the bottom of the band photo - that guy is responsible for these Deep Purple meets Motorhead licks. Tough to scour for info on a band called Stress, but there's a quote on Metal Archives from the singer about how he thinks that they should be considered the true speed metal pioneers since this LP came out a year before Kill 'em All. Pretty ballsy.

The Wizard went on to say that this may be up the alley of The Hearse riders and urged me to share this rare gem of Pepsi-sponsored Brazilian Dirt Metal weirdness. I have already listened to it three times, it is fucking awesome bit of fuzzy guitars, captivating hooks, and just plain out great rocking Heavy Metal. Already know this will be in heavy rotation in the next few weeks. What an amazing find. Thank you Wizard, once again you prove most badass.

Nuclear Winter Gloom

One of Cosmic Hearse's favorite revisionist punk/crust/grind/whatever bands Nuclear Frost managed to get out a proper album in 2011 and it cooks. Nuclear Winter Gloom outshines the awesome demo D-Beat War '83. Young Brazilian kids totally gorked out on G.I.S.M., Scandinavian Hardcore, '80s thrash, proto-Black Metal, neanderthal Grind, and all the other good things in life.

Black Force Domain

Savage, unrelenting terror is what Krisiun serves up on Black Force Domain, their debut album from 1995. Krisiun were formed by three brutal brothers named Alex, Moyses, and Max in 1990. Krisiun's brand of Death Metal is particularly violent. It almost never breathes, just keeps on pummeling with both muscle and precision, almost too much at times. Not for the wimps, gawkers, or casual hobbyists, this is pure sonic violence. Even Satan would be freaked out by this one.

Inmitten Des Waldes vs. Mortualia

Not so much a bout but rather a sad-off between two Black Metal bands favoring a more sorrowful and somnambulant style of kvlt and nekro. Already I come into this with a serious bias, Inmitten Des Waldes is the work of N. Schner (Valium, Namelezz Projekt,) who I believe to be one of the more interesting characters in the South American scene. However Mortualia's Shatraug is no slouch. With an impressive resume including Horna, Sargeist, and Behexen (among others), I was eager to hear Mortualia. Inmitten Des Waldes start off with a fluttering melancholic piano intro and then lurch into the track "Supreme Tragedy of All the Times." The band follows a more crawling Burzum approach, not terribly unlike fellow countryman and Hearse favorite, Draugurz. Mortualia also prefer the more lethargic tempos, but while Inmitten are depressed and forlorn, Mortualia is just plain snapped. Weird desperate shreiks over menacing, meandering riffs. This one is almost too close to call, both bands are simply mesmerizing, but I might have to give it to Mortualia for their closing track "Paine Sortie..." which makes me want to cut my wrists in a bath tub full of breast milk.

The Mist

The Mist were a thrash band from Belo Horizonte Brazil. In 1991 they unleashed their second album The Hangman Tree, and it's really fucking good, and a vast improvement over their debut Phantasmagoria. Generally I don't go for this kind of slick thrash but The Hangman Tree is really fun in a sort of less accomplished Coroner way. At times it reminds me a bit of old Sepultura (guitarist Jairo Guedz was a founding member of Sepultura and played on Morbid Visions) and on occasion they channel classic Megadeth. Periodically The Mist ventured into some introspective cornball keyboard and acoustic guitar moments, but this keeps the album dynamic and interesting. The Mist were cool, but '91 seems a bit late for this type of thing. Oddly enough, if this came out last year I could see it getting some attention.

Winter, Alcohol, Benflogin

Here's some extremely raw and primitive improvisational Black Metal from Brazil's unfortunately named, Namelezz Projekt. This is the collaborative effort of Newton and J. who also operate in numerous lo-fi entities such as Hyperborean, Inmitten Des Waldes, Forest Poetry, Ecce Hommo, Valium and many others. Seems these two gentlemen act as the whole Black Metal scene in their town of Ponta Grossa. In 2005 alone Namelezz Projekt released six very fucked up demos, the last of them being titled Winter, Alcohol, Benflogin. This curious title seems to be the recipe for the Namelezz Projekt's clumsy approach to slapdash nekro hell. Some of you may remember Newton as the proprietor of the extremely awesome Gungnir label who released great stuff but many times failed to send it to you in a reasonable time frame. No hard feelings though, eventually it came and it was always worth the wait. This is still one of my most prized cassettes. Oh, and Benflogin is a Brazilian analgesic that if taken in large quantities can produce an LSD like effect, probably best not to mix it with alcohol, or winter .

Genocidio

Genocidio, another balls-out barbaric Brazilian horde in the grand tradition of Sarcofago and Sextrash. So now you know what to expect, breakneck speeds, cruddy guitar sounds and plenty of chuckle-worthy ESL lyrics about Satan and violence and tons of other bad things. At times the members of Genocidio seem to be in a race to the end of the song, or clinging for dear life as the whole thing careens out of control into a darkened abyss, but such was the style for many young Brazilian bands in the late '80s, speed was everything, speed and Satan. This self-titled EP was unleashed in 1988. That art would look pretty cool painted on a van.

Psychic Possessor

Crazed Brazilian crossover thrash from Psychic Possessor. The band ventures into some questionable "grooves" from time to time on their 1988 debut album Toxin Diffusion. Most of the lyrics deal in the dangers of toxins and biochemical weapons, an obsession that seems to permeate the scores of new retro thrash trend bands. I'll take Psychic Possessor over Municipal Waste or Toxic Holocaust any day of the week.

A New Age

Three of Brazil's wonkiest and most intolerant one-man NSBM bands are featured here on Chaos To Unleash A New Age. Evil, S.A.R., and Thallium have all been featured on the Hearse, all are among my favorite purveyors of South American retardo-black-misanthrope-metal. This 3-way hatefest has exclusive tracks from the bands (including a Brutal Attack cover from S.A.R., and a Graveland cover by Thallium.) The usual Cosmic Hearse caveat about being sensitive to fucked up ideologies applies here.

Persona

Weird, lo-fi, Brazilian psychedelic interludes that never really develop into anything. Almost like jingles, or vignettes from a Zé do Caixão film. I know very little about this other than I love it. I guess the band was called Persona, the album was called Son and this was released in 1975.

Exterminate!

Exterminator were another hyper-extreme proto-Black/Death cult band from Brazil. Their bassist (credited on this album as Freddy Krueger) went on to be a member of Sextrash. Exterminator's only release was the poorly produced Total Extermination LP. So bad is this recording that it's impossible to discern what's going on, so this may only be of interest to those who froth over the no-fi offerings of the Cosmic Hearse or those completists who absolutely crave all things Brazilian, satanic, and weird. Seriously, this makes Sarcofago's I.N.R.I. seem like Yes' Fragile in comparison. I also want to add these guys had no political agenda, the swastika is just there to ruffle feathers ala Holocausto, and my isn't it shocking?

S.A.R.

S.A.R. stands for Southern Aryan Response, so right away you know the agenda. The southern part refers to this band's origins in Brazil. Now while I can't condone the political views of S.A.R., I can totally condone their ridiculously gorked and dim-witted Black/Thrash mess. So if you're a fan of the wonky Black Metal that makes it on The Hearse, and you aren't spooked by unsavory politics, then this is for you. This self titled, self released tape came out in 2001, and it's deliciously bad-good.

Guerra

Oh, hell yeah, motherfuckers. Back when I posted the classic Warfare Noise 1 comp I mentioned that, while Sarcofago might have been the most influential of the hyperspeed Brazilian satanicunts, it was Holocausto's contribution, as well as their war-obsessed third reich schtick that I found most compelling. Their first full length LP, Campo De Extermino is a much maligned classick of chaotic blasting riffery, goofy Portuguese lyrics about warfare, and enough primal teenage shock tactics to earn it's place as your new favorite Brazilian thrash album. Adore o poder do culto brasileiro da guerra!!!

Black Mountains

Geheimnis is a stunning, one-man Black Metal band from Brazil, led by a character called Count Belial. This tape, Das Negras Montanhas, reminds me a bit of older Judas Iscariot. It was released by Gungnir Productions in 2005 in limited quantities. That means that you don't have this, unless you are really kult. Fortunately for you, I am, but not too kult to share.

I.N.R.I.

Sarcofago's debut album I.N.R.I. is as responsible for influencing the look of modern Black Metal as any Bathory or Venom. It's no secret that Sarcofago made quite an impression on a young Norwegian named Oystein Aarseth, better known as Euronymous, the founder of Norway's seminal Black Metal band Mayhem. Some believe (notwithstanding Kiss and King Diamond) that Sarcofago were the first to don the macabre corpse paint, now de rigeur among today's aspiring Satanic musicians. This Brazilian horde were also pioneers in the fine art of sheer and unfettered blasphemy. To this day, Sarcofago's disdain for organized religion is unparalleled. Boundaries were pushed musically as well. Sarcofago took the aggression of classic German Thrash acts like Sodom and Kreator and cranked the tempos. Sometimes Sarcofago seemed to playing faster than they were really able to, the result is sloppy, barbaric, and most effective. It's hard to imagine how different the landscape of extreme metal might look had this album never come to be.

Sarcofago started in 1985 when Wagner Antichrist was booted from Sepultura. Sure, he could have sat at home and felt sorry for himself but instead he called on his Christ-hating homies, Incubus, Butcher, and Leprous. Sarcofago were born and soon submitted two tracks to the Cogumelo Records Compilation Warfare Noise. 1987 saw Sarcofago releasing what would be their classic, and the subject of today's post. They went on to make four more albums before calling it quits in 2000, but none of these had the ferocity of I.N.R.I..

KulturKampf

This cassette is by far the weirdest bit of Third Reich fetishism ever to come out of the shadowy world of Nationalist Black Metal. Command are the concern of one lone hater from Brazil named "Herr Wolf." Beyond lo-fi, beyond ugly, Command play raw, RAC-inspired, basement black-punk, layered in greasy hiss, and more hateful than a pack of retarded hungry dogs in a Sao Paulo ghetto. Occasionally the racket is broken up by soundbites from the glory days of Germany, when people were happily governed by well-dressed closet homos who won them over using a combination of stylish presentation and unfettered racial scapegoating. While Command loves the latter, their beauty lies in their total rejection of the former. Again I add the disclaimer that if you are squeamish and sensitive to the fact that the world is full of bad people that are full of irrational hatred and fear, I suggest you stay away from this one. Anybody else interested in primitive 4-track recordings about Nazis will find this to be a score.

D Beat War '83!!!

Here is a great cdr demo from Nuclear Frost. It really should be enough that it bears the words "Dis-Bomber Scand-Core" in a faux VoiVod script with an image of a super-spiky Nikki Sixx, but you also get the added bonus of their ultra-cranked scratchy noize attack. Not really all that Scandi or D-Beat, more like early grinding crasher crust, but fuck the labels, right? These filth-obssessed crusties from Brazil know what you like, loud, fast, chaotic. Oh, this came out in 2007 not 1983, but the sentiment is greatly appreciated. Obrigado!

Sexual Carnage

Sextrash was started in 1987 by former Sarcofago drummer, D.D. Crazy. Much like Sarcofago, Sextrash played hyperspeed primitive death/thrash with english-as-a-second-language lyrics about Satan, alcohol, and fucking. After releasing a few demos and the XXX ep, the band entered JG Studios in Belo Horizonte, Brazil and recorded their classic Sexual Carnage album. It's a wild dionysian orgy of manic riffing and juvenile sadistic sex fantasies, and it's thoroughly enjoyable. Your girlfriend will hate it.

Tudo Chover Pedras Negra Metal!!!

Cruor Cultum are a Brazilian band that worship at the bloody altar of Norwegian black metal circa early '90s. In fact they sound alot like Gorgoroth did when Gorgoroth was about Satan and darkness rather than infighting and lawyers. The duo of Lord Mephyr and Hamon don't draw things out too much, the songs are concise, effective hymns for the horned one. This gives Cruor Cultum the opportunity to showcase an arsenal of melodic riffs. Cruor Cultum is so dedicated to the rules of traditional norse black metal they've create something of a tribute album in Bloody Days on the Altar . It is rule!!!!
