Finland's Raate is easily one of the best active Black Metal bands around. I have seen these guys compared to Burzum, and while some of the tones and structures are similar to Varg's work, Raate have taken the influence and injected enough dour Finnish ethos to create something thoroughly their own, mystifying and dark. Here I present their first CD Halki Kuolleen Maan.... Genius.

i know you like comments, but i've never left one. i've been reading the hearse for a year now, so i guess that makes me an asshole. anyways, just wanted to say thanks for all the really great music you've given me. hopefully it won't take me another year to comment again.
btw, my coworker is a guy named erik whitaker who used to live in san francisco (he now lives in seattle). he says he used to know you or he met you or something, and he says hi if you remember him.
thanks again
Yes, I know Erik well. Give him my best.
this is the perfect end to a perfect day
Downloading this just on the strength of the cover art. Will report.
Wow - I've listened to this three times in a row now. I fucking love it. thanks again!

Remarkably good. There are some similarities to Burzum, sure, but the buzz is different here, somehow more delicate, cleaner shine, melancholic. Thanks for this.
I enjoyed this, and the subsequent LP release. I am not certain for its staying power, but having had a Finnish friend of mine translate lyrics, it might be the case that this is going in the to-buy list.
Not heard of this duo 'til today. Thangyew!
Brilliant artwork! Is the toddler dragging a plague rat on a leash? A turd? This was a great gift injected into my Friday, Aesop. May I suggest Lugubrum for slightly similar Burzum-esque strangeness? I'd suggest the difficult-to-find debut LP for starters: 'Winterstones'.
Yes, Lugubrum is a favorite of mine.
Fuck! Thanks Aesop! This is some of the best fake-burzum I've heard in a while. It's not so hypnotic or cold as the real thing, but they got the finger-picking bits and the just-the-guitar atmospheric bits, which most fake-burzums forget about.
Great choice!
How come the little kid gets to have clothes and the less small one not?
"Winterstones" is good, btw, although I'd say it has a different sort of atmosphere to Burzum.
wait - is the big kid trying to jam some sort of tail up his ass?
The artwork is definitely by Finnish symbolist painter Hugo Simberg (1873-1917). Check out his works, they are magnifiscent.
I wonder why no one has bothered to point that out.
