Ritual

Ritual, the 1991 debut album from one of the earliest and most eccentric Black Metal bands, Master's Hammer from Czechoslovakia. I don't want to say too much, but there is really only two types of people in the world; those who love Master's Hammer, and those who haven't heard them yet.

I downloaded this expecting to say that it was soulless crap like most of this kind of shit you foce me to listen to, but it was really good! Quit writing papers and write more blog info, jerk. I hate googling.

And you generally hate metal. A win for Master's Hammer. Two more weeks left in this class and I can start listening to music and watching gialli again.

For fans of this album you should pick up the excellent re-release from "Nuclear War Now" ASAP because lets face it after listening to this you are going to want their fuckin flag.

Fer real. I'll kick myself someday for not picking up the extra fancy NWN! version, but I'm too cheap. I'll stick with my cheapo 2 X CD.

I have the NWN set. 4 vinyls and a poster in the most beautiful lavender and gold foil book thingy. It ran me a bout fifty bucks. Worth every penny.

I would totally marry Master's Hammer.

Man, one day there won't be any new music to post/talk about on the internet because you'll have covered it all.

Thanks again, Aesop.

"Jilemnice Occultist," their second album, is totally great as well, maybe not as good as "Ritual" but a hell of a lot weirder... TYMPANI TYMPANI TYMPANI! If you like this one find that one too...

Aesop,
Thanks for posting this! Speaking of gialli, Have you seen The House With Laughing Windows? It's a very strange example of that genre. Atmosphere for days...

Aesop said...

Yes, I have seen it. Excellent giallo.

great record
has those lost production touches

in a way, darkthrone and burzum ruined black metal for everyone else
their classic records codified black metal
both blessing and curse

this is a great album but the one after it is even better

Damn, this gets under the skin. I just realized how much I've been listening to this in the past couple of days. Nice bit of woozy drift to those chugging guitars. Love it.

And on the giallo note, expect you've seen, but if not: Death Laid an Egg (Giulio Questi). The horror of a post-Fordist chicken factory meets remarkable Bruno Maderna soundtrack.

S a/o B, have not seen that one but have heard of it and have wanted to.

I was sceptical about the "those who love Master's Hammer and those who haven't heard them yet" comment, but faaaarrrk this is so good!

Nice one!!! Someone mentioned the early 90's czech black metal scene - were there more bands like this?

this is really good. vocals are kind of funny but the riffs and the timpani are awesome. great production/sound too. after a couple listenings i already was familiar with this, it has gotta be a classic.
amazingly, i just found the first pressing of this cd, and a few more albums of them at a street fair for 5 euros each. needless to say, i bought this one, eheh

Thanks a lot for this. I'd seen a picture of John Haughm wearing a shirt that bore their logo, but finding any recordings of the music is super difficult. Anyhow, I'm curious to listen!
