Nard Times

"Nardcore" refers to the punk scene from Oxnard, California's lima bean capital and home to some of the better bands that played the ol' hardcore in the '80s. We heard from Ill Repute, Stalag 13, and Dr. Know but this comp also has tracks from other Nard-hitters like R.K.L., Agression, and Scared Straight, and some lesser known Nard tards like False Confession (who rule,) Rat Pack (also rule), The Rotters (not so great,) A.F.U., and Habeas Corpus. More good than bad on this regional compilation. Nardcore (the album) serves as a great primer in Nardcore (the scene) or a snapshot of certain place at a certain time. So what if it's on Mystic?

It was a very skateboard oriented county, yes? And would you consider Ill Repute a straight edge band at all?

Great comp. It's so awesome when little happenings lik this occur and can be documented. Maybe not as important as FLEX YOU HEAD or The PEACE comp, or as mythical as CLEANSE, but a great little snapshot of a time when a bunch of great bands had a great thing happening. Ill Repute still rips!

Oxnard is basically where a filthy waterfront, a latino gangland, and a low-income retirement community all converge in the name of doing everything completely half ass. It is sad waste of a town in the shadow of some of the country's most decadent communities and it is a prime example of the kind of widespread hopelessness and aesthetic meltdown that breeds a solid punk scene. The thin, weasily, spastic scrappiness of Nardcore just had to happen, like steam escaping from a pressure cooker, and it is likely the first and last time you'll hear about Oxnard in some kind of artistic light. Also, in answer to JM, yes, I shredded the shit out of the 'Nard in the 90's and it was certainly home to a seriously devoted skate scene. This is probably more a testament about how unappealing going swimming there is than it is an indication of the area's readiness as a skate hub.

Haven't listened to it yet, but it has several bands that I enjoy. Excellent write up as usual, especially in the last two sentences.
