Terror Abraxas

A while back Cosmic Reader devotee, Vugelnox, requested some Aussie metal in the vein of Destroyer 666. Well, here is Destroyer 666 themselves with their somewhat rare Terror Abraxas EP. This limited CD was recorded shortly after the lads relocated to Holland, and released by German metal purist label, Iron Pegasus. I think this shows D666 at their peak, ferocious, unrelenting, but also reflective, and melodic at times. In my book this band can do no wrong.

while listening to this i feel like i should be wearing some white high top reeboks, rat my hair, and headbang... but in the snow, so its Black.
Thanks, this rules.

This is one of the few decent bands my country has shat out. I haven't got this, so I am estatic. Cheers!

Oh, come on now. What about Gospel of The Horns, Cauldron Black Ram, Hobb's ANgel of Death, Empire of Hate...

Good stuff, I like the melodic sensibility, but obviously not giving up anything in the way of raw power and surging momentum.

White Horse is another good one

The bands utterly silly name has always prevented me sampling their stuff, but since you seems to give your thumbs up i might have to reconsider.

...Abominator, Bestial Warlust, Beasts of Bourbon, Scientists, Primitive Calculators, Sick Things, Abyssic Hate, Fuck...I'm Dead, Portal, Stargazer, Slaughter Lord, Sadistik Exekution, Urgrund... and that's without the benefit of thinking very hard. Apologies for the name-droppin', but a sizable amount of my fave thunder is Antipodean.

Oh yeah: this EP is essential... almost posted it thee other day. Oh well, not like I don't have lotsa other choices.

destroyer 666 is a band i had heard of several years ago but never bothered to listen to.thanks to your mighty blog i have now seen the light!i guess it's never too late to discover a great band.thank you once again.

Ahh, Jake. T'was bound to happen. You beat me to Dark Quarterer and Black Hole, but I'm sitting on some Black Hole demos, and there is no shortage of killer D666 releases to post.

And a big ol' yes to Portal. ANd then all the great non-metal from down under...Birthday Party, Rose Tattoo, Buffalo, Radio Birdman, The Lime Spiders, Gash, Sedition...

I spent some time in Australia as a teenager and saw some great shows, met some great people and had some of the best pizza ever.

another band that slipped past my attention... I might've been guilty of ignoring 'em due to the name myself, but as others have said your endorsement is good enough for me. so thanks again.

ps - Jake: make with the Bestial Warlust why dontcha? ;]

thanks Aesop! D666 might be my favorite band ever, right next to indomitable hometown favorites Immolation. I only had the privilege of seeing them once back in 2006 but that was the best show I saw all year.

As for great Aussie metal, you can add Ignivomous, Nocturnal Graves, Cemetery Urn, Vomitor, Destruktor, Grenade, Sacriphyx, Trench Hell, Battalion, Guild of Destruction, Funerary Pit, Assaulter, The Kill, Sithlord, Urgrund and Razor of Occam to the list. (I also apologize for the name dropping but like Jake I enjoy many of the country's metal exports). Just saw Cemetery Urn last month down in Brooklyn. There weren't many folks there but they put on a killer show and imo are a much stronger band then Abominator with whom they share members.

Maybe I am strange but I think Destroyer 666 is a pretty great name for a metal band. Gospel of the Horns is not.

Yes this band rules and I totally agree with the description of unreleting yet melodic. I was lucky enough to see these guys on their last US tour at Metal Kingdom in Queens, NY and it was among the best shows I have ever witnessed. Thanks for this and for all the posts.

Yes. I saw D666 here in SF and more recently, Gospel of The Horns and Cemetary Urn.

I agree Destroyer 666 Is a great name for a black metal band...meanwhile as far as non-metal from Aus goes The Saints put out a couple of the best punk records ever (in my humble opinion) and Angel City (AUS The Angels) put out some good hard edged hard rock ("Marseilles" really go it's hooks into me when I was a kid)....I guess AC/DC is a bit obvious but fuck....they're still AC.DC! This EP is great by the way. BM w/ enough just enough classic metal. Thanks again!

The Saints, indeed.

Frankly, I'm surprised Australia doesn't sink into the sea. The country seems to be made out of metal.

Destroyer 666's Phoenix Rising is a great morning record. Makes me want to go out and vanquish my foes.

Phoenix... is a killer album but I am a little skeptical of the drums, either it's a program or it's triggers. I much prefer "Unchain The Wolves" and the demos. "Cold Steel" was just okay.

incredible band
incredible cover art

I agree about the overly clicky drums on Phoenix although it has some of their best songs on it. Cold Steel though, LOVE that album! Every song on it is total gem to my ears, especially Sons of Perdition, Black City Black Fire and the Schmier style riff in Savage Pitch that sounds like something off of Infernal Overkill.

I'm appalled that you haven't mentioned the ALMIGHTY aussie sleazemonger experts RUPTURE! Green goblin is our leader!

A brilliant release by a brilliant band! I'm proud to say my copy is signed by Mr. Warslut himself. the beautiful cover art is by the late Rosaleen Norton. Forgive the shameless self-referencing here but everyone should know her name and sacred work:

Let us also not forget D666's long-out-of-print 'Lord of The Wild' 7" which features two of their most stirring hymns AND Rosaleen Norton cover art (and lyrics)! Regarding Aussie metal there is also Atomizer and Spear of Longinus who are not mentioned in the lists above.
